Located in central Georgia is a city known as Perry. It is positioned in Houston County and serves as the county seat. A small portion of the city extends into Peach County. Atlanta is located about 100 miles north of Perry and Savannah is located about 170 miles east. According to the 2016 United States Census Bureau report, about 16,000 people lived in Perry.

Perry was founded in 1823. The city was originally known as Wattsville and was established for the purpose of conducting the legal affairs of Houston County. When it was formed, Perry was purposefully placed in the middle of the county. The name of Perry was changed from Wattsville to honor Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. In 1824, Perry was incorporated as a city following the approval of the Georgia legislature. After incorporation, Perry became the first official town in Houston County.
